Animal Care Protocols: 2011 Annual Status Report for 2010

Please submit the completed form in it's original MS-Word document format as attached to the email notification:
(please do not convert to PDF)

Information and Instructions:

  • The personnel section should include all persons that will interact with animals while not accompanied by a person who is listed on this form and has completed the MU animal care training requirements. This annual update to the list of personnel will serve as a modification to your protocol (qualified personnel may be added mid-year as needed by email to animalcare@muohio.edu) .
  • Check the email notifications you received for protocol numbers, titles, and important dates.
  • In the progress report section, make note of any problems that were encountered during 2010 or other facets of status. For research and teaching protocols, do not leave this section blank. See below for edited excerpts from last year as examples. Each example does not consitute a complete report..
  • If animals are being produced in a breeding protocol but the associated research protocol(s) has been placed on hold for some reason, this should be addressed in the report.

Report Excerpt Examples

Research:

  • We anticipate returning to one or both of these field sites in the summer of 2009 to collect additional data. We will also be continuing our studies at Miami University’s Ecology Research Center (ERC) in the summer of 2009 where we will once again be holding research animals in enclosures.
  • I am currently further analyzing the data and depending on the results I may have to conduct more trials prior to the date of cessation
  • We are still in the application process for an NIH grant. A new protocol will be submitted with detailed aims and procedures prior to any more animal use. This protocol may be deactivated.
  • In 2008 there were 4 manuscripts published that depended, at least in part, on research supported by this protocol and the supporting breeding protocol.
  • We are finishing these experiments to complete a manuscript. Results have been presented at the last two society meetings.
Data collection and analysis are ongoing for this project. No animals are being trapped at the current time, but when the weather improves, trapping will resume. When winter returns , trapping will cease again, and the field portion of the experiment will be complete.
  • We have completed the first phase of our project with publication of one manuscript and presentations at several meetings. We have initiated the next phase. The project has been relatively inactive for several months as new graduate students are being trained on various methods and non-animal aspects of the project. However, the animal work will start up again soon.
  • Animal use ended in July of last year with no problems earlier in the year and as indicated above, the protocol can be deactivated.
Teaching:
  • We had nearly 800 visitors; 35 students in several different classes; banded nearly 2800 birds of 106 species as part of our bird banding stations and Ornithology classes in 2008-2009. Everything went well and as expected.
  • Students do behavioral observations of various species in their natural environment. The species encountered vary by year, but this year included ____________. Students were instructed regarding being minimally disruptive and the issues of transporting disease or exotic species from the habitat of one population to another.
  • Students and faculty attempted to search for and captured small vertebrate animals during a total of four lab periods. On one occasion, no animals were caught. a total of 18 animals (above) were captures and released without incident on the remaining three lab trips. The animals were held for no more than 5 minutes for observation before release and held by only the person who captured the animal.

Breeding:

  • The breeding colony management timetable was adjusted in July to reduce production as staff were not available to conduct experiments.
