Committees (IBCs) are established under the NIH
Guidelines for Research Involving Recombinant DNA Molecules.
IBC's provide local review and oversight of nearly all forms of
research utilizing recombinant DNA. The
IBC is tasked with considering the protection of humans, other animals,
plants, and the environment. |

In response to federal guidance, Miami has
assigned their IBC the responsibility of reviewing a variety of
experimentation that involves biological materials (e.g., infectious
agents) and other potentially hazardous agents (e.g., carcinogens).
Additional guidance is forthcoming from the National Science Advisory
Board for Biosecurity (NSABB). The NSABB addresses issues related
to potential "dual purpose" biological agents, i.e. those
agents that while serving an important research function may also
be used as weapons. Therefore, security becomes an issue in addition
to lab and environmental safety. |
