Lambda Pi Eta
Omicron Upsilon Chapter
ΛΠΕ is the official communication studies honor society of the National Communication
Association (NCA). As an accredited member of the Association of College Honor
Societies (ACHS), ΛΠΕ has nearly 420 active chapters at colleges and universities
worldwide.
ΛΠΕ was founded in 1985 at the University of
Arkansas. ΛΠΕ became a part of the National Communication Association
(NCA) in 1988, and the official honor
society of the NCA in 1995.
ΛΠΕ represents what Aristotle described in his book, Rhetoric, as the three
ingredients of persuasion: Logos (Lambda) meaning logic, Pathos (Pi) relating
to emotion, and Ethos (Eta) defined as character credibility and ethics.
The goals of ΛΠΕ are to:
1. Recognize, foster and reward outstanding scholastic achievement in communication
studies;
2. Stimulate interest in the field of communication;
3. Promote and encourage professional development among communication majors;
4. Provide an opportunity to discuss and exchange ideas in the field of communication;
5. Establish and maintain closer relationships between faculty and students;
and
6. Explore options for graduate education in communication studies.
In order to become a member of a Lambda Pi Eta chapter, the student must:
1. have completed at least 60 semester hours in college;
2. have completed at least 12 semester hours of communication study;
3. have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0;
4. have a communication studies GPA of at least 3.25;
5. be currently enrolled as a student in good standing;
6. display commitment to the field of communication.
