Graduate Programs: Assistantships

Mass Communication Assistantships & Financial Assistance

The mass communication area awards about nine graduate assistantships each fall. For the 2003-2004 academic year, the stipend was $9,003 and included a waiver of instructional fees. Most graduate assistants work with mass communication faculty and staff in teaching, lab, research, or operations capacities. Four assistantships are assigned to WMUB in news, operations, and development. Graduate assistants are expected to work 20 hours a week, and, according to Graduate School regulations, must carry at least 10 hours of graduate coursework each semester.

The Graduate School also offers summer assistantships (up to $1,600) to students who have served as graduate assistants during the academic year. To receive the assistantship, you must enroll in 12 hours of graduate course work during the summer. The summer assistantships do not require any service from award holders.

Speech Communication Assistantships & Financial Assistance

The speech communication area awards about thirteen graduate assistantships each fall. For the 2003-2004 academic year, the stipend was $9,003 and included a waiver of instructional fees. Through assistantships, students have the opportunity to teach their own undergraduate section of Public Expression and Critical Inquiry (public speaking). Some graduate assistants may also have the opportunity to work with our award-winning forensic teams or with our Public Relations Student Society of America chapter, one of the largest and most active in the nation.
