IX. FAMILY LIFE EDUCATION
As a Family Life Education Cooperative Extension Specialist, I developed approximately 40 different family life education materials, including family games, teaching guides, information packets, and booklets. I conducted over 60 workshops to a wide variety of audiences on topics such as stress management, communication, and building family strengths. I participated in about 35 call-in radio shows, prepared over 40 public service announcements, was taped about 10 times for later radio broadcast, and appeared on over 15 television shows. I also prepared about 20 newspaper columns and 65 news releases. Moreover, I helped in the production of (and appeared in) How to have an accident, an educational film on stress and farming that received three national awards for excellence. These activities have persisted at Miami University, where I continue to produce family life education materials for community use, conduct community family life education, and participate in radio shows and interviews for news releases. I am also a Certified Family Life Educator (National Council on Family Relations).
X. INTERNATIONAL FOCUS
Much of my work, from graduate school to the present, is characterized by a more global or international focus. My instruction reflects this focus as does my scholarship and professional service. Some recent examples include: (a) two residencies (1990 and 1991) in Brazil conducting research and collaborating with peers, (b) a research leave (1994 with return visits to Germany in 1996, 1997, and 1998) in Europe studying families that own and operate businesses (including residencies at: Social Work Program, Berufsakademie, Villingen-Schwenningen, Germany; Miami University John E. D. de Luxembourg; Department of Geography, University of Newcastle, England; Department of Sociology and Social Policy, University of Wales-Bangor; School of Agriculture, University of Aberdeen, Scotland; and Institute of Ecology and Resource Management, The University of Edinburgh, Scotland); (c) emerging scholarly work in collaboration with European scholars particularly qualitative research of rural and business families; (d) research in collaboration with the UN Secretariat for the International Year of the Family; (e) collaborative scholarship on social policy, families, and economic development with Eastern European scholars; (f) an edited book on families in global perspective with chapters edited by native scholars; and (g) a co-authored book on the family as a global phenomenon and social policy and practices that are supportive of families in their diverse forms. I also serve on the Editorial Boards of international journals, served on Miami University's International Education Committee and Hampton Fund for International Initiatives Reading Committee, and am the Campus Contact for the Fulbright program.
