Executive Board Meeting Minutes Sept. 22, 2005

Faculty Reception Report:
The reception was a successful event, with 17 people present. There were 5 potential new members to the Center from 5 different departments and present faculty associates from 7 different department divisions.

Fall Research Discussion:
Friday, November 4 is the preferred date for the Research Discussion. However, that Friday was problematic for a number of board members, so Bergen will ask for an alternative date. Valerie Freysinger and Aimin Wang are scheduled as faculty speakers.
(Note: Final Date will most likely be Monday, November 7.)

International Family Strengths Conference:
Peterson reported on the conference held last May in Mexico. He stated that 2008 will be a good year to hold the conference at Miami held at Peabody Hall on Western. Will be co-sponsored by the Center and the School of Interdisciplinary Studies. A planning group was formed consisting of the four members present Wolfe, Harris, Hennon, and Peterson. Bergen will act as ex-offcio.

Harris discussed Lyong Cotton's visit on December 2nd to present sessions on at-risk families and adolescents. A motion for Center to co-sponsor was approved (Harris, Wolfe second). Bergen will discuss funding options and details.

Submitted Proposal Status:
Dickey has applied for a grant to fund technology research. Therrin and Mokhtari are currently collaborating on three grants, two funding reading research which are still awaiting approval and on approved and conducted last summer. Southern and Therrien are currently working on two studies, Alternative Pathway to Licensure in Special Education ($200,000), and federally funded Project Ahead, which is in its second of 5 years ($225,000/year).

Potential Proposals:
Partnership to assist with evaluation and research with possible subcontracts through the University and involvement of graduate students will be available in collaboration with the Butler County Collaborative. Bergen will ask the director to meet with interested faculty.

Question arose as to how to best get in contact with members about various grants applicable to their interests. A listerv was suggested; options will be investigated further.

Faculty Associate Changes:
Wolfe mentioned that faculty associate Siam Ballock, who has gone to the University of Chicago, be made a faculty affiliate (Hennon second). Southern now will be interim board member during Sherman's absence during the spring semester.

Other Business:
Hennon made announcement that the Fullbright proposal went through for Dilek Cindogle of the Dept. of Political Science at Bilkent University in Turkey to visit from January 7 - February 11. During her stay, she will speak on sexuality and abuse of women in the Muslim world, give presentations in various classes, meet with Middle Eastern Studies minors, and also be involved with Xavior University. The Center is acting as a co-sponsor for hr visit. Hennon also reported that Bruno Hildenbrand, with whom he authored the Journal of Comparative Family Studies, will be giving a three to six hour seminar for students outlining social construction and qualitative research. His presentation will also consist of the structure of child welfare assistance in Germany. This will take place in February on an undetermined date. The status of the Family Supports web page was discussed. The webmaster will contact Hennon to finalize status.

The next board meeting is scheduled for October 20th at 10:30 in 405 McGuffey.
