Members present: D. Bergen, C. Hennon, J. Fopma-Loy, G. Peterson, L. Sherman, A. Wang, C. Wolfe, and D. Kovacs (GA)

Members absent: F. Constantinidou, J. Potteiger, Y. Harris, M. Dantley, and J. Wanko

Meeting commenced 2:00.

Minutes approved (Sherman, Wolfe)

Web Page Update: Bergen and Kovacs met with Jesse Murphy, the webmaster, to preview new web page and discuss remaining updates. Changes left to make include reducing the border on the main page, editing personal information on faculty pages to include research interests, and making sure members listed are current by adding and removing names. The new page is estimated to be in place in a week or so, and will remain at the same web address. Links to faculty departments were requested as well as resource sites to add to the CHDLT web page.

Family Studies web page: Hennon shared his tentative outline for the main page and reports that he is meeting with Murphy later this afternoon to begin construction of the site.

Wolfe reported that Dragonfly’s children’s page hit its one millionth visitor recently. This page is linked to the CHDLT web page. He plans to investigate if there is any way to access the Dragonfly Inquiry teacher training page also through a link on CHDLT’s web page.

The Center’s office space is available for small meetings now that construction is complete on McGuffey Hall. It is located at 100J, and Bergen is requesting a sign be put on the main hallway since the office door is not visible from the main hall.

International Family Conference Update: Peterson will find out the final details (logistics, cost, date) of the Defrain visit that is tentatively scheduled for this April. He also reports that it is likely he will attend this year’s conference and can give feedback from it regarding the resources needed to host the conference.

Proposals submitted: C. Shore received feedback from a proposal she submitted approximately 18 months ago, but is unsure if she will resubmit with recommended changes. T. Southern was funded for an analysis of the state’s programs for accelerated learning. C. Wolfe submitted a proposal in December to continue research on argumentation, and J. Wanko is expecting word back very soon whether he will be funded for RAMP II, a continuation of the collaboration between Miami Faculty enhancing Hamilton math teachers. Word on the Jones, Wickstrom, and Therrien grant is still awaited.

Potential funding: Board discussed the limited funding available for research from government agencies at this time. Most opportunities now are from foundations, and board members continued the dialogue about the unclear procedure for acquiring clearance from Development and/or the Research Office for submitting to foundations for funding.

Fopma-Loy will investigate if there are any Mental Health funding opportunities available from the state.

Peterson suggested bringing state officials to the university to establish a relationship and find out what sort of research proposals the state is looking for.

The Indirect Cost Recovery for 2003-2004 was $3165.68, with an additional $2275 in the sales account, bringing the total amount available in CHDLT accounts to approximately $16,000.

Newsletter update: Kovacs reported that the newsletter will be produced soon and will include articles on Constantinidou’s research on categorization training for patients with traumatic brain injury, Wanko’s RAMP project, and Southern’s recent funding for accelerated learning. There will be a piece that describes Wolfe’s research on argumentation and another on his appointment as co-director of the Center.

After some discussion, the Board decided to have a Faculty Research Discussion this spring despite waning attendance at previous discussions. Strategies to increase attendance were presented, including opening the discussions to students. Wang volunteered as a possible speaker.

Motion to approve William Therrien as a Faculty Associate (Sherman, Wang). Approved.

Meeting adjourned 3:00.

NEXT MEETING FERUARY 22ND AT 11:30.
