Purpose and Description

The purpose of this CELTUA grant is to enhance teaching and learning at Miami by encouraging departments and programs to engage nationally known teacher-scholars in their disciplines to visit their programs to inform, consult, and inspire with respect to teaching and learning. When the visit is linked with the Lilly Conference on College Teaching, discussion and reflection on the topic of teaching can be shared with a broader range of faculty from other campuses.

The visiting teacher-scholar makes a presentation to and consults with the members of the department or program about teaching and learning issues and concerns; for example, he or she might present a departmental seminar on new directions, issues, or techniques in the teaching of the discipline, visit classes, etc. Topics may include undergraduate or graduate education. When the visit can be scheduled in conjunction with Miami’s Lilly Conference on College Teaching, the visitor is invited to present to the Conference an address or a seminar about pedagogical, learning, or other issues that would interest other faculty in the visitor’s discipline or in cognate or all disciplines.

The department or program will handle arrangements for and coordination of the visit. If the visit is in conjunction with the Lilly Conference, arrangements should be made in consultation with Milt Cox, Director of the Lilly Conference.

Recipients must agree to submit a one-page report upon the completion of the visit, or no later than the beginning of the next academic year, describing the visit and its impact on the intended audience.

Amount

The maximum for each grant is $500. These funds may help cover the visitor’s honorarium, transportation, lodging, and meals. CELTUA will transfer the funds to the department or program.

If the department wishes, the Lilly Conference Director will arrange for the visitor’s lodging and meals at the Marcum Center during the Lilly Conference.

Application Procedure

The department or program chair makes the application for this award. The application consists of a cover sheet (download from the CELTUA Website), the proposal (explained below), and the curriculum vita of the visitor.

  • Goals and objectives of the visit, and how these will help solve the problem or meet the need of the department or program.

  • Anticipated impact of the visit on faculty, students, and instruction in the department or program.
  • Amount requested and a line-item budget indicating approximate costs of the visit, how the CELTUA grant funds will be used, and the sources for funding any amount not covered by the CELTUA grant.
  • (Optional) If the visit is linked to the Lilly Conference on College Teaching, ways in which the visiting teacher-scholar may contribute to the Lilly Conference (possible title of presentation, etc.) and ways in which the department may enhance the Lilly Conference, for example, conduct a special seminar for participants from other campuses.

A CV or summary of information about the visiting teachers-scholar should be e-mailed with the proposal as an appendix.
