Faculty Learning and Inquiry Group ("FLING")
Concept
A FLING is a project-based, short-term (4 to 6 weeks) learning community of 5-10 members with a focused goal, the attainment of which provides its own motivation and reward.
- If at all possible, FLINGs should culminate in an outcome that can be included in a faculty member’s annual report.
- FLINGs should be proposed more to satisfy the intellectual curiosity or other intrinsic intellectual needs of a group, rather than acting as a committee assigned to a task.
- FLING proposals might wish to concentrate on pressing university initiatives such as engaging students, meaningful assessment, recruiting and retaining good students, and the modeling of excellent college teaching.
- FLINGs should be encouraged to work in conjunction with student groups or individual students.
More details, examples, and proposal instructions can be found in the FLING description.
