Muriel Blaisdell is a professor of history and affiliate of the Women's Studies Program. Dr. Blaisdell’s current work includes an essay on “The History of Science as a Resource for Interdisciplinary Studies.” Her book project, Going to Extremes: The Scientific Exploration of Extreme Terrestrial Environments, includes history, history of science, and critical evaluation of writings on the North and South Poles, Mount Everest, Amazonia including the rainforest canopy, Tropical Africa, Indonesia, and the abyss and vents of the sea.

Brenda Boyd, CELTUA Faculty Teaching Associate, Advanced Learning Technologies, has ten years of experience collaboratively developing fully online and hybrid courses with faculty. She is actively engaged with the development of a statewide consortium (Ohio Quality Matters Consortium) to conduct peer reviews of online courses using the Quality Matters process. She is available to consult about the possibilities technology can offer teaching and learning. She has facilitated and participated in several Faculty & Professional Learning Communities (FLC) and will be facilitating a new one about Second Life for Teaching & Learning in January.

Kent Bradshaw, CELTUA Faculty Teaching Associate, Communication, is CELTUA's part-time faculty advocate and the CELTUA liaison with Miami University Middletown's (MUM) Center for Teaching and Learning. He coordinates the small-group instructional diagnosis (SGID) and newcomer mentoring program at MUM, is active with the MUM Office of Community Engagement and Service, and teaches Organizational Communication at Miami Oxford, MUM, and VOA. He has been active for 25 years in community leadership training through the Leadership Mid-Miami Valley program, and is a founder/owner/principal of a 20-year-old organizational consulting firm, thecumberlandgroup.com

Milt Cox is Associate Director of the Center, founded and directs the Lilly Conference on College Teaching, is Editor-in-Chief of the Journal on Excellence in College Teaching, and facilitates the Hesburgh Award-winning Teaching Scholars Faculty Learning Community. Milt also is project director of a FIPSE grant establishing faculty learning community programs on other campuses. He is recipient of the C. C. MacDuffee Award for distinguished service to Pi Mu Epsilon, the national mathematics honorary, and a certificate of special achievement from the Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education in recognition and appreciation of notable contributions to the profession of faculty, instructional, and organizational development. He is the facilitator of the Alumni Teaching Scholars Community for Early-Career Faculty.

Matthew Evins, is a 2007 Miami graduate and holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education. Currently working to complete his Masters degree in Instructional Design and Technology, he coordinates innovative methods of faculty development at the Center. Matthew is the coordinator for all external grants hosted through CELTUA. Additionally, Matthew assists with event planning and budgets. He is also the manager of operations and technology for the Lilly Conference on College Teaching.

Joyce Fernandes, CELTUA Faculty Teaching Associate, Zoology, teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in Developmental Biology, Cell Biology and Neurobiology. She is particularly interested in interdisciplinary approaches to learning and teaching science, and has facilitated a learning community on that topic. Joyce is facilitating the 2007-08 Faculty Learning Community on Enhancing Academic Success of Under-Represented Student Groups in STEM Disciplines. Joyce's research laboratory conducts projects in the area of neuromuscular development, which are funded by the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation.

Matt Howell, a graduate from Miami University's Mass Communication program, is the Center's technical specialist. He designs and maintains the CELTUA, Faculty Learning Communities, and Lilly Conference websites. He also develops solutions for collecting and managing information online using technologies such as PHP. Matt assists with photography and graphic design for the Center.

Tom Kopp, CELTUA Faculty Teaching Associate, Teacher Education. Formerly with the Syracuse University Center for Instructional Development, Tom has for the past 25 years been a member of the Teacher Education Department faculty. Concerned about the high school-college transition, he coordinates the multi-section course, EDT 190 "An Introduction to the Teaching Profession, and acts as a First-Year Honors Mentor. A campaigner for active learning, he has developed and delivered over twenty-five different courses and seminars for educators. Underlying it all is his work in the dynamics of human motivation, specifically how curiosity affects learning.

Alicia Miller joined the Center in 2006 and is our administrative associate. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education from Purdue University and has worked in many venues, including Social Services, and as the Director of a Nursery School. Alicia is the Lilly Conference registrar, and handles room and catering scheduling/contracts. She helps in creating new ways to advance the knowledge of Faculty Learning Communities and supports the staff in all of their many endeavors.

Marjorie Keeshan Nadler, Communication, is Faculty Associate working on the Top 25 program. She was the team leader for the COM 135 Top 25 initiative, and is Course Director for COM 135. Part of her research and teaching focuses on instructional communication, and she is working on developing new technology to enhance classroom efforts and sharing of resources among faculty as well as inquiry based learning initiatives. She is a resource for those working on Top 25 initiatives and those wishing to build oral communication into their classes.

Jerry Sarquis, CELTUA Faculty Teaching Associate, Chemistry, has expertise in the areas of peer-led team learning (PLTL), structured group work, and teacher education in science. He also is interested in how multimedia technology can be used to effectively supplement and enhance lecture and laboratory experiences. He is co-facilitating the Faculty Learning Community on Enhancing Academic Success of Under-Represented Student Groups in STEM Disciplines and working with Theodore Wagenaar to set up a Student Teaching Consultant Service for Miami faculty.

Ronald Scott, CELTUA Faculty Teaching Associate, Communication (with specialty in Mass Communication) teaches courses that are designed to enhance student learning through critical thinking and reflection. Ron is facilitating the 2007-08 Faculty Learning Community for Understanding and Developing an Inclusive Campus Climate. He has developed diversity seminars for students and faculty and courses that deal with American culture and diversity. His area of interest, in addition to diversity, includes faculty, staff, and student inclusion in the classroom and across campus.

Cecilia Shore, Director of CELTUA, facilitates CELTUA's New Faculty Teaching Enhancement Program (NFTEP), and the Graduate Student Teaching Enhancement Program (GSTEP). Her teaching interests include active learning methods, student intellectual development, undergraduate research and graduate students' development as teachers. She has considerable experience in curriculum revision and assessment at the departmental level. She received the Associated Student Government Outstanding Teacher Award in 1990, and the College of Arts & Science Distinguished Educator Award in 2000.

Beverley Taylor, Physics, Hamilton Campus, is Director of the Top 25 Project: Engaging Students in Their Learning. In this project many of the university's highest enrollment courses are being redesigned to be more student-centered and to emphasize inquiry-based learning. She has expertise in inquiry-based teaching, particularly in the sciences, in assessment at the course and departmental level, and in the scholarship of teaching and learning.

Theodore C. Wagenaar, CELTUA Faculty Teaching Associate, Sociology and Gerontology, has received teaching awards from various regional and national professional associations. He is a 1999-2000 Carnegie Teaching Scholar. He has led numerous workshops on curriculum development, evaluating teaching, and effective teaching methods and is available to consult on these topics. He is leading the CELTUA Evaluation of Teaching Seminar Series. He is also working with Jerry Sarquis to design and implement a Student Teaching Consultant Service for Miami faculty.

Gregg Wentzell is Assistant to the Director of the Center. He earned his Ph.D. in English at Miami in 1993 and was awarded the Sinclair Fellowship. He is managing editor of the Journal on Excellence in College Teaching, a peer-reviewed international forum for the scholarship of teaching. He has over 20 years of college teaching experience and teaches part-time in the English Department. In addition to providing editing support for various Center projects, including being Lilly Conference Publications Manager, Gregg does faculty consulting on teaching and writing. He presents seminars on the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning both on-campus and at teaching and learning conferences. He has experience with and has participated in faculty learning communities.

Committee for the Enhancement of Learning, Teaching, and University Assessment is a subcommittee of University Senate. It serves as the advisory committee to the Center and selects CELTUA grant recipients and the winners of the Knox and CELTUA Teaching Excellence Awards.
