SPRING INTERNSHIP & CAREER EXPO (Spring ICE)
Designed for students seeking internships AND graduating students seeking full-time employment. More than 120 regional and national employers are expected. Students should dress professionally and bring copies of their resume. A list of participating Spring ICE organizations (including organization links and descriptions, positions, and majors desired) is now available at our Spring ICE Information Site. You will be required to input your MUNet User Name and Password to enter the site. If you are offered a subsequent on-campus interview, you must register with the Office of Career Services on Miami CAREERlink, if you are not already registered.
Sorry, There Is No List of Jobs We are often asked by students for a copy of The List of Jobs available to Miami students. They are not talking about the list of employers who are recruiting on campus or the jobs listed on our Miami CAREERlink, but an actual magical list they may use to contact employers about available jobs. Unfortunately, no such list exists! It is understandable why the thought and myth of such a list might provide some comfort to those looking for a job. After all, you probably looked at a list of colleges and universities prior to applying to colleges. You may also research employers based on a list of the best employers to work for. “Lists” provide quick, accessible, and useful avenues to information. So, why not make The List of Jobs available to Miami students? It sounds like a reasonable request. Here are two primary reasons why this list does not exist: (1) it would become out-of-date almost on a daily basis and (2) 70 – 80% of jobs are never placed on a list, which means that list would only scratch the surface of available jobs. There is no substitute for good old-fashioned networking, contacting employers directly, and researching employers on the internet. The Office of Career Services has some excellent information on how to conduct a job search. We also offer various workshops on the job-search process. To access these resources, go to www.muohio.edu/careers/. Click on “Students”, “Job-Search Resources”, and then select a link to your area of interest. Never give out your social security number, bank account numbers, or credit card numbers when applying for jobs online or responding to online information requests for background checks. Identity thieves have been known to post fraudulent job postings on online job boards, contact applicants with e-mails that lead an applicant to believe they are being considered for the job, and then ask the applicant for the type of personal information described above to be used as a part of a “background check.” This information is then used to steal the applicant’s identity. For additional information on this scam, refer to the HOT TOPICS section of this newsletter. |
