The Miami Lantern
   Welcome

The Career Services staff is pleased to bring you The Miami Lantern. This newsletter is published six times during the academic year and includes relevant job-search articles and other useful information for your future job/career. Announcements will also be a regular feature. This newsletter is sent to all seniors and graduating students as well as key contacts across campus.

In order to take full advantage of the resources available to you through the Office of Career Services, you should register on Miami CAREERlink. Many employers use Miami CAREERlink to identify candidates and invite them to interview on-campus. Students also gain access to job listings of employers who may not come to campus to recruit.

Click on the link above to access Miami CAREERlink. If you need more detailed instructions on how to use the system, please refer to Miami CAREERlink Quick Reference Guide.

   Tips for Using Miami CAREERlink

Miami CAREERlink has a variety of helpful and interesting features designed to assist you in your job and internship search. We hope you find the following tips useful:

  1. Miami CAREERlink will send you regular emails of job and/or internship postings that might appeal to you. In order to use this feature, you must select ‘Yes’ to receive email notifications (example in PDF format).
  2. In addition, you must select criteria within the ‘Jobs’ tab under ‘Advanced Search’. It is imperative that you save your search (example in PDF format) and then organize a schedule of how frequently you would like to receive emails (example in PDF format). To avoid missing any exciting opportunities, the Office of Career Services suggests receiving emails DAILY (example in PDF format).
  3. Please accurately fill out the profile section. A number of undergraduate students have incorrectly identified themselves as “alumni” in the system and have therefore been unable to sign up for on-campus interviews until the problem is fixed. In addition, students have made mistakes, such as typing in an incorrect email, and as a result have missed out on emails from employers.
  4. You MUST submit a resume to apply for available positions that interest you.
  5. To register with Miami CAREERlink or search for jobs you must access the page directly through our Web site (www.muohio.edu/careers/, click on ‘Students’, click on ‘Miami CAREERlink’ in the lefthand navigation). If you Google Miami CAREERlink, you will be taken to the EMPLOYER section of the system and will be unable to log-in.

Ethical Considerations for Your Job Search

As a prospective employee, integrity in interactions with employers mandates that you enter the job market honestly and ethically. Once your job search is underway, you may encounter some ethical “dilemmas”.

  • Do you know your rights and responsibilities as a job seeker?
  • Can you use actual interviews as “practice”?
  • Are you familiar with established procedures if you need to cancel an on-campus interview?
  • What do you do if, after you’ve accepted a job offer, another organization offers you a “better” package?

Committing a breach of ethics may have long-term consequences that you may not have considered. Some Ethical Considerations to Guide Your Job Search provides a basic, ethical framework of common professional practices that you should recognize and follow. Additional practices and procedures are outlined in the articles under Hot Topics.
