The questions below are frequently asked questions on how to plan for out-of-state teaching possibilities. Where can I find out about the requirements for certification in other states?
The American Association for Employment in Education (AAEE) Job Search Handbook contains a listing of addresses and telephone numbers of all U.S. State Teacher Certification Offices. Since certification and testing requirements in other states are subject to change, it is best that you write or call the appropriate state certification office and inquire about the steps to take for certification. You may pick up this publication at the Office of Career Services in Hoyt Hall.
Teacher Certification Requirements In All Fifty States is a publication that will tell you how you can obtain a teaching certificate in all fifty states. This directory is available for reference at the Office of Career Services in Hoyt Hall. Ask the librarian in our Career Resource Center for this publication.
How can I contact school districts in other states?
AAEE also publishes the Directory of Public School Systems in the United States. This publication contains:
- school name
- address
- telephone number
- name of the appropriate hiring official for each district listed
It also includes a code to indicate grade levels and size of each school district listed. This is also available upon request from the librarian at the Office of Career Services Career Resource Center.
King Library maintains a set of the QED State School Guides for all states in the U.S. This is a comprehensive directory of all public and nonpublic K-12 schools. Not only does it include contact information on all school districts, but also contact information on all the schools within the school district. Other features include:
- student enrollment
- number of teachers
- multicultural student percentages
- college bound percentages
- technology information
Patterson's American Education provides contact information for nearly 12,000 public school districts. It also includes contact information on 28,000 public secondary schools, and more than 4,000 private and Catholic secondary schools. This publication is also available upon request from the librarian at the Office of Career Services Career Resource Center.
CareerSearch is a powerful online database of more than 2 million employers from every major sector of the economy. Search for school districts by geographic location and find school personnel administrators and contact information. The results can be saved or downloaded in a convenient format. How can I find out about out-of-state teaching vacancies?
A variety of teaching positions, including those for out-of-state school districts, are posted regularly in the Employment Opportunity Listings on the Office of Career Services Web site. Submit your resume and other application materials to the designated administrator.
The Office of Career Services provides Internet resources specifically for students interested in teaching and administrative positions. You will find a variety of sites that allow you to:

The AAEE Job Search Handbook also contains a number of display notices from out-of-state school districts that anticipate vacancies. As noted previously, this publication may be picked up at the Office of Career Services.
