Science

The following are brief descriptions of what kind of communications you would be working with for each specialty.

Computer Science
If you decide to specialize in computer science, you might create user documentation for computer hardware and software in print or online, or in other multimedia communications that would enable customers to use products effectively.  Skilled technical communicators help users realize the full potential of the latest hardware and software products.

Environmental Science
A professional area in environmental science is for you if you are interested in becoming involved in environmental concerns such as pollution, resource management, and the conservation of plants and animals on our earth.

As an environmental communicator, you could assist scientists by preparing journal articles for publication.  You might write proposals, reports, and other communications to help secure funding for environmental projects or to monitor hazardous waste clean-ups.  You might even work with naturalists in a zoo or park setting to develop communications designed to make members of the general public more aware of their effect on the environment.

Medical and Health Science
An interest in medicine and health care might lead you to a professional area in the biological sciences.

With this professional area, you might work in a variety of public or private organizations to assist scientists in preparing journal articles, research and grant proposals, legislative reports, and other communications for stakeholders, funding agencies, and the general public.  You might work in a large or small hospital to prepare patient education materials or request funding and support from the public.  You might also work in a pharmaceutical company to prepare new drug applications and related documents for the Food and Drug Administration, or instructional and marketing materials for patients or physicians.
