Professional Area Courses
When you specialize in environmental science in the technical and scientific communication major, you can gain background knowledge in botany, geography, geology, physics, and zoology through professional area courses in these departments. This practical experience will give you a better understanding
of the various interdisciplinary fields that contribute to knowledge in
environmental science. With expertise in this area, you will be
prepared to interact with technical specialists to create a variety of
specialist and non-specialist communications.
Technical
and scientific communication majors who wish to take their professional
area courses in environmental science should ideally choose 18 hours
from the list of preferred courses. However, optional courses
in Humanities, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences are also acceptable.
Students who take hours in a professional area as a summer scholar may
be able to count up to 6 of the 12 hours toward their specialty area.

Substitutions
If you would like to ask about possible substitutions for any of these
courses, contact Professor Sandra Woy-Hazleton (529-5845; woyhazs@muohio.edu).
Please
ask Professor Woy-Hazleton to forward a memo regarding substitutions
to Jean Lutz in the English Department.
NOTE: Some
of the courses listed below have prerequisites; however, these prerequisites
do not count toward the degree requirements for the major.

If you are interested in a broad base in environmental science…
These courses are important to understanding the range of disciplines that contribute to environmental scientists’ work.
To fulfill the requirements, you will need to take at least one course in each of the following categories: biological science, chemical science and earth science. You are welcome to take more than one course in any category, but the extra courses will not count toward your major requirements. All courses below (except CHM 142/5 and GLG 211) fulfill MPF Natural Science IV requirements.
