Apply for the BATSC Major

As soon as you decide to become a BATSC major, you should:

  1. See Jean Lutz, Program Director, in 378 Bachelor. She will assign you a pre-major code that will preference you in courses in the major.
  2. Register as soon as possible for ENG 313 (ENG 215 on the Hamilton campus) and SAN 154.
  3. As soon as you complete ENG 313 (or 215), apply for formal admission to the major by following the directions below.

Formal Application

To formally apply for the BATSC major, do the following:

  1. Obtain an application from the program director or on the BATSC Web site here.
  2. Choose your professional area (computer science, environmental science, or medical and health science).
  3. Gather the following materials:
    a. A current advising transcript
    b. 3-5 writing samples
    NOTE: A résumé should not be one of the samples included in your portfolio, but you may attach yours if you wish.
  4. Fill out the form and send it to:

    378 Bachelor Hall

    NOTE: Submitting a timely application is important since admissions are limited to 20 students each year.

IMPORTANT NOTE: You must apply for admission to the program before you can enroll in ENG 415 or graduate from the program.

Your application will be reviewed by the program director and other faculty who teach in the program. The program director will send you a letter conveying their decision. Applications are considered as they arrive.

If you are a transfer student, you will need to have your transfer hours and courses evaluated by the College of Arts and Sciences and by the English Department. You will also need to apply for admission into the program.
