Trooping the Colour is a unifying, patriotic celebration. This celebration brings all the British Isles together as one to come and honor their established system of monarchy. Through the honoring of the monarchy, which was the type of government chosen to be retained by the British people, cultural diversity is downplayed, descent all diversity or disagreement is overlooked on a day when all can agree is a day for all British citizens. In 1805 the ceremony became an annual event to celebrate the king or queen's official birthday (Henderson and Thompson 1997:346). In celebrations people often affirm the joyous outpouring of their spirit and the creative play of their imagination in a variety of the performing and decorative arts. The term celebration can encompass festivals, rituals, ceremonies, spectacles, pageants, fetes, holidays, and extravaganzas, and partakes of all these elements (Dorson 1982:33). The British flag represents all individuals that live in the country, no matter what race or creed. A common interest, such as support of country and government, unites people. Also, pride in one's country is a sign of the influence and strength that a country and group of people control.
The cultural significance of Trooping the Colour relates to social structure, politics, and economics. By participating or supporting Trooping of the Colour, an individual is paralleling support for the social structure already established by the government of the United Kingdom . Honoring the Queen with the display of the country colors is supporting and acknowledging the fact that the country is now headed by a purely symbolic monarch. A monarchy is an expression of social stratification in the U.K. An autocracy is a government with a single person in charge with unlimited power. The royal family is very wealthy and has an impact on policy but does not make the policy or totally control the economy. Along side the royal family are everyday citizens who work for their pay and do not just necessarily inherit social control. This makes for several different levels within the British social structure having different distributions of power, prestige, and wealth among the peoples. People with a higher social stratification will have more privileged lives with more possibilities than people of a lower social stratification. Trooping the Colour as a celebration legitimizes the wealth and power held by the royal family.
Trooping the Colour is also significant to politics and the economy. In the past, the Queen was the ultimate authority, but today she is just symbolic and the actual governing body is the democratic English Parliament. Trooping the Colour is not a religious celebration, but a government supported holiday. It promotes the political organization within the country. This celebration is similar to American celebrations such as President's Day or Independence Day. Both of these celebrations have nothing to do with religion or self-interest of the people, but with support for government proceedings. Since the monarch inherits their title, this means that the sole individual who receives the throne purely based on genetics. As opposed to a democracy, where many individuals have affect on who is in charge. The economy in a monarchy is more easily effect by the current monarch because they hold more power as an icon than the individual citizens hold. They are able to apply heavy persuasion with the kind of authority they have, but are not able to force something to happen. Trooping the Colour has a great amount of cultural significance in terms of multiple cultural realms that are reached by the Queens influence.
Trooping the Colour expresses culturally important ideas such as patriotism and support for the military and government. It is a patriotic event therefore implying that the United Kingdom values its citizens having pride in their country. Increased patriotism will make for increased support for the country and its decisions in general. By acknowledging the military history of the celebration, the United Kingdom and its citizens values the importance of having a good military. Military members, troops, are honored by the Queen every year at this event. If the military was not important to the country, then they would not be involved with an event important enough to deal with the most powerful person of the country. Trooping the Color, as a government celebration in the first place, emphasizes the importance of government in lives of its citizens. To celebrate is to perform ritual publicly and formally, though sometimes ‘the public' may consist of no more than members of a single family (Turner and Turner 1982:201). People of the country honor the monarch, their military, and their government all by acknowledging the importance in recognizing the flag.
