What Do Christians Do with the Bible?

Photo of book entitled Social Life Scriptures

Rutgers University Press has published “The Social Life of Scriptures” edited by visiting assistant professor James S. Bielo. A major contribution to the anthropology of Christianity, this book offers an eclectic, cross-cultural, and comparative investigation of Bible use by American evangelicals and charismatics, Jamaican Rastafarians, evangelical and Catholic Mayans, Northern Irish charismatics, Nigerian Anglicans, and Chinese evangelicals in the United States. It asks how different groups use the Bible in organizing social structures and meanings, focusing especially on gender, ethnicity, agency, and power.
