Miami University
Chair's Welcome

Welcome to the Department of Anthropology. The Anthropology program has existed at Miami University for over fifty years and became an independent department in 2002. Our mission is to generate, transmit, and disseminate the cultural and evolutionary knowledge developed in anthropology’s four fields – archaeology, biological, cultural, and linguistics.

This fall semester in 2007 we have 18 faculty members contributing to the teaching mission of the department.  Several faculty have joint appointments or affiliations with other departments or programs.  These include the Center for American and World Cultures, the International Studies Program, the Latin American Studies Program, the Institute of Environmental Studies, the Department of Sociology and Gerontology, and the Department of Zoology.  Our faculty are located on the Oxford, Hamilton, and Middletown campuses.

We offer a major and minor in Anthropology, five thematic sequences, three capstone courses, and numerous opportunities for students to engage in research.  Our undergraduate students regularly present their research on campus and at regional and national professional meetings.

Each summer, we schedule several workshops to introduce our students to the challenges and joys of fieldwork. In summer 2007 we offered four workshops.  Two of these were in archaeology--one here in Ohio and one in the Bahamas.  The other two workshops focused on cultural anthropology and were entitled "Cultures and Environment in Brazil" and "People and Culture of Tibet."  The latter workshop was taught in Dharamsala, India.

To find out more about our anthropology program please contact our Chief Departmental Advisor, Mrs. Judith Spielbauer, or speak with your faculty member if you are enrolled in an anthropology course.
