Welcome
Welcome to the Department of Anthropology. The Anthropology program has existed at Miami University for over fifty years and became an independent department in 2002. Our mission is to generate, transmit, and disseminate the cultural and evolutionary knowledge developed in anthropology’s four fields – archaeology, biological, cultural, and linguistics.
We offer a major and minor in Anthropology, five thematic sequences, three capstone courses, and numerous opportunities for students to engage in research. Our undergraduate students regularly present their research on campus and at regional and national professional meetings. Each summer, we schedule several workshops to introduce our students to the challenges and joys of fieldwork. In summer 2007 we offered four workshops. Two of these were in archaeology--one here in Ohio and one in the Bahamas. The other two workshops focused on cultural anthropology and were entitled "Cultures and Environment in Brazil" and "People and Culture of Tibet." The latter workshop was taught in Dharamsala, India.
