The Transformation of Public Culture:
Assessing the Politics of Diversity, Democracy, and Community in the United States
Symposium, March 4 - 6, 2004

Liberty Montage: Intro Art to the 2004 Public Culture Symposium

At a time when the lines between public and private space are increasingly blurred, what constitutes public action? How is the public defined and represented? Who shapes and controls public space? And how are shared public identities created and sustained? Focusing on four central themes -- public action, public image, public space, and public identity -- this interdisciplinary symposium explores the shifting meaning of public culture and civic engagement in the United States over the past century.
