Call for Papers for 1987 AIS conference-"Interdisciplinarity in Public Life: The University and Its Communities" is the theme of the next AIS conference, to be held in November at Penn State University.

  • The Politics/Pedagogy Network has issued its own call for papers on the theme "Constructing Conference Events: Communication Style" for the Penn State conference.
  • The Politics/Pedagogy Network will sponsor an exciting, pleasant, yet serious activity at the 1987 conference: "Researching the AIS."
  • There will also be a computer available for participants who have good ideas, syllabi, bibliographies, etc. on disk to bring for other s to copy and help establish an AIS library of information.
  • Julie Klein needs volunteers to take over the "AIS Bookshelf" bibliography column in the newsletter. San Francisco State Faculty Seminar in IDS Graduate Education -In February, 1986, the University Interdisciplinary Council at San Francisco State University sponsored a faculty seminar on interdisciplinary curriculum and core methodology at the gra duate level.     Confessions of a First Time Interdisciplinarian- by Elaine Englehardt. At last someone is found. From time to time the editor had tried to persuade faculty teaching their first interdisciplinary course to keep a journal so excerpts could be publ ished.

    • The Washington Center for the Improvement of the Quality of Undergraduate Education has been awarded a $41,000 grant from the Matsushita Foundation for a cooperative high school-college project.
    • The 16th annual conference of the National Association for Ethnic Studies will be held in March in Hartford, Ct. on "Ethnicity: Race, Class, Gender/Old Ideas and New Perspectives."
    Edward Said's Orientalism: Review and Critique. This is a deconstruction of an interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary field of learning referenced as Orientalism and consisting of scholarly works of history, geography, philosophy, econo mics, travel books, journalistic texts, and works of art and literature.     Review: Interdisciplinary Analysis & Research: Theory and Practice of Problem-Focused Research and Development, edited by Darly E. Chubin, Alan L. Porter, Frederick A. Rossini and Terry Connolly. This book is an ambitious effort to provide a comp rehensive introduction to interdisciplinary problem-focused research (IDR). Review by Guy Beckwith.
    Theodore Hershberg AIS Conference Keynoter- Founder and director of the Philadelphia Social History Project, which may be the largest interdisciplinary social science research project ever undertaken.

    • News of AIS members: Guy Beckwith has received tenure at Auburn; Julie Klein is back and healthy from a Fullbright in Kathmandu; Jerri Lindblad is now assistant Director of the Honors Program at Univ. of Maryland; Tom Murray is Director of the Center for Bio-Medical Ethics at Case Western; Philip Valley is back on the faculty at St. Anselm; and Ron Woodbury is now Vice President and Provost at Lock Haven Univ.
    • Worcester Polytech is hosting back-to-back conferences, first, Science, Technology and Society Studies and then the 12th annual meeting of the Society for Social Studies of Science.
    • The Association of Graduate Liberal Studies Programs holds annual conference in October in Baltimore at the Lord Baltimore Clarion Hotel.
    IDS Research Grants Program at the University of Iowa-Begun in 1985, the University House Interdisciplinary Research Grants Program invites applications for research undertaken by two or more university of Iowa faculty members, each contributing a particular methodological strength. Projects must be designed to culminate in a collaborative article or book or in a proposal for external funding for further research.
    Said's Orientalism Again- Barry Castro says Guy Beckwith's review (AIS Newsletter, May, 1987) seemed to be muddled.

    International Association For the Study of Cooperation in Education- Under the initiative of Shlomo Sharan, IASCE was founded in 1979 by educators from many countries assembled in Tel Aviv, Israel to establish a network of researchers and practione rs interested in developing and applying a variety of cooperative pedagogical strategies.     Philosophy Network Update-
    Faculty Position at Clarkson University-The Faculty of Liberal Studies seeks a tenure-track, beginning Assistant Professor of Humanities.
    Faculty Positions at Evergreen State College-Evergreen a public, liberal arts college has three positions to be filled.
    Call for Student-Written Articles-"Voices of Youth," a semi-annual, nationally distributed magazine published by the Meiklejohn Education Foundation, promotes "an intergenerational dialogue on education, self, and civic values" through articles wri tten by persons ranging from high school students to senior educators, but especially students connected with experimental, interdisciplinary programs.

    1988 AIS Officers Elected-Results of 1988 election.
    Miami's School of IDS Awarded Grants-The SIS (Western College Program) at Miami Univ. was the recipient this fall of an $86,000 grant from FIPSE. The Program was also awarded an Academic Challenge grant by the Ohio Board of Regents to establish two new tenure-track faculty positions (valued at $75,000 in the first year).
    Faculty Positions at Case Western Reserve-The Center for Biomedical Ethics of the School of Medicine at Case Western Reserve Univ. plans to hire two tenure tack faculty.
    Integrative Group Master's Projects at Michigan's School of Natural Resources- On the whole, the Master's projects are very successful in meeting the goal of interdisciplinary learning from each other on complex topics. Article by Harrison Morton, University of Michigan
