Call for Papers Expanded for San Francisco The call for papers for the San Francisco AIS/AGLS conference on Oct. 25-27 has been expanded to March 15, 1984.
The Weekend College: An Interdisciplinary Degree Program for Working Adults , by Julie Klein A review of Wayne State University's interdisciplinary program designed to allow working adults to obtain a degree in four years.
Report on the February AIS Conference The fifth annual AIS conference was held on Feb. 3-5 in Oxford, OH. The conference emphasized discussion by distributing papers before hand and limiting presentations to 5-10 minutes. The keynote speaker was Martin Trow who presented "Interdisciplinary Studies as Counter-Culture."
Networks Formed at February Conference.. At the Oxford conference the AIS launched a new, experimental service for its members. In order to facilitate communication among those with similar interests, the AIS has devised a set of three on-going informal networks: The Philosophy Network, The Pedagogy Network, and the Politics Network.

  • The Society for the Study of Social Problems will hold its 34th annual meeting Aug. 24-26 in San Antonio, TX.
  • The University Without Walls International Council has issued a call for papers for its 3rd international conference on New Concepts in Higher Education to be held June 14-16 in Cincinnati.
  • A Symposium on Collaborate Learning and the Reinterpretation of Knowledge will be held May 5 at Yale University.
  • Several interdisciplinary programs were highlighted at last October's 31st annual meeting of the National Association for Core Curriculum in Danvers, MA: Harvard's core program, BU's Capstone Project, and St. Anselm's ID humanities program.
Job Openings in Interdisciplinary Studies Two positions are offered: Director of University Studies and Weekend College Program, Wayne State University and Visiting assistant Professor of Interdisciplinary Studies, Miami University.
Journals Receptive to Articles in Interdisciplinary Studies A list of journals receptive to IDS articles. It should be viewed as exemplary, rather than exhaustive.

Network KIOSK , by Julie Klein The Philosophy Network: a bibliography of interdisciplinary sources. The Politics Network: Asks three questions: What are the goals of interdisciplinary programs across the country? How are these programs administered? Can we add to the list of interdisciplinary programs published in the AIS Newsletter last fall? The Pedagogy Network: call for members.
Review of Carol Gilligan's, In A Different Voice , by Nelson Bingham. This book centers on the moral development of women. It focuses on the theoretical models of Lawrence Kohlberg. Gilligan criticizes these models on several grounds and develops her own model. Bingham feels that this book will stimulate greater awareness of one's own world view, as well as foster a deeper appreciation of interdisciplinary theory and research.

  • The Board of Directors of AIS announces that Raymond Miller was unanimously voted President-Elect in the last election.
  • The Program Committee for the AIS/AGLS conference in October reports that they have received over 100 proposals to present papers.
  • The Evergreen summer Institute for College Teachers will hold a workshop on "Designing Conceptual Activities" June 25-29, 1984 on the campus of Evergreen State College.

The Cybernetics Systems Programs At San Jose , by William Reckmeyer. A description of the Cybernetic Systems Programs as San Jose. It offers two programs: one leading to a non-degree undergraduate minor, and the other to a Master of Science degree.

Glenn Olds Keynotes for AIS/AGLS Conference -President of Alaska Pacific University will keynote the conference on "Higher Education and the Citizenry's Reciprocal Responsibilities" held in October at the Golden Gateway Holiday Inn in San Francisco.
Interdisciplinary General Education At Stockton State College -This article highlights the host of the AIS conference to be held October 11-13, 1985. Article by Ingrun Lefleur, Dean of General Studies.
News In Brief -*Literature and Science Society Proposed -The Modern Language Association's Literature and Science Division has formed a subcommittee to investigate interest in establishing a society to facilitate research and information exchange in Literature and Science Studies.
*Call for papers for Creativity and Science conference in March in Honolulu. This conference, subtitled "An interdisciplinary inquiry into constructive interactions between the sciences and the humanities," will feature keynote speakers Leon Edel, Lenn Goodman, Harold Morowitz and George Wald on the nature of psychological evidence.
Report on the Interstudy Conference, by Ray Miller -The third interstudy conference of the international Association for Interdisciplinary Research was held in August at the University of Washington. Coincidentally, the association was founded in Germany in 1979, the same year as AIS.
Job Openings in Interdisciplinary Studies -Evergreen State College will be filling some 20 faculty positions for next year.

Inquiry Program At the University of Massachusetts -The program provides students at UMASS-Amherst with an alternative means of satisfying the general education requirement at the university and, with the exception of foreign languages, of the College of Arts and Sciences.   • The Nominating Committee has proposed the candidates for the 1985 election.

Report on the OECD Interdisciplinary Conference in Sweden -The Swedish National Board of Universities, the University of Linkoping, and the OECD
(Organization for Economic Cooperational and Development in Paris) co-sponsored a new international conference on interdisciplinarity in Linkoping, Sweden. Entitled "Interdisciplinarity Revisited: Re-Assessing the Concept in Light of Institutional experience". Report by Julie Klein
