WHAT WE'RE ALL ABOUT
Air Force ROTC's
goal is to recruit, educate, train, and commission officer candidates
through a campus program to meet the needs of the world's greatest Air
Force. Air Force ROTC’s mission
simply stated is: Produce leaders for the Air Force and better citizens for
America.
THE PROGRAM
We currently offer a 4, 3, 2, and 1-year
program. Most cadets go through the
4-year program. The first two years
is called the General Military Course (GMC). Freshman and sophomore cadets are
required to complete one Aerospace Studies course per semester. It's a one credit hour course that meets
once a week for 50 minutes. Freshmen
learn about the structure and mission of the Air Force and take a look at
military life. Sophomores study the
development of air power. In
addition, cadets attend a Leadership Laboratory (LLab) that meets once a
week for 2 hours. During LLab you'll
practice customs and courtesies, drill and ceremonies, and develop your
leadership skills. You will also
listen to guest speakers, participate in sports and physical fitness
activities, and learn about areas of opportunity available to commissioned
officers during LLab. You may also
elect to participate in Base Visits and orientation flights.
The GMC course will prepare you
to compete for a slot in the Professional Officers Course (POC). Continuation beyond the sophomore year is
not automatic and selection is based on merit. In addition, you must also successfully
complete a 4-week field training camp at an Air Force based the summer
prior to your junior year, with pay.
At field training you will receive junior officer training, aircraft
and aircrew orientation, survival training, weapons and familiarization,
and physical training.
Once you've
successfully completed field training you'll enter the Professional Officer
Corps. During your junior and senior
year you will take a 3 credit hour course each semester focusing on
leadership, management, communication, military law, and other officer
skills. You'll also continue to
attend LLab, but in more demanding cadet leadership positions.
Other activities you
may choose to get involved with include Drill Team, Joint- Service sports,
Arnold Air Society, our Public Affairs staff, and various social activities
such as a Joint-Service Military Ball and Detachment Dining-Out.
WHAT DOES IT COST YOU?
All uniforms and
Aerospace Studies textbooks are provided free.
Also, you are not committed to the Air Force until either their
junior year, or if you are on scholarship.
That gives you two years to “try us out” without obligation. Once you graduate and are commissioned as
a 2nd Lieutenant, commitment is generally 4 years on active
duty, but can be longer for special career fields such as pilot and
navigator, or medical/legal fields.

It
is important to note that all our cadets are as much students as they are
cadets, meaning that almost all are heavily involved in regular campus
activities to include fraternities, sororities, intramural sports, and
hundreds of other student and campus organizations. Air Force ROTC is the best way to earn
a commission as an United
States Air Force officer while still
enjoying a social college experience!
