Assessment is the systematic collection, review,
and use of information about educational programs
undertaken for the purpose of improving student learning
and development (Palomba & Banta, 1999).
The Higher
Learning Commission, part of the North Central
Association of Colleges and Schools (which is Miami
University's regional accrediting body), includes
assessment of student learning in its accreditation
criteria. The Commission's website includes a set
of resources
about assessment. Many programmatic accrediting bodies
(e.g. ABET for Engineering
or NCATE for Teacher
education) encourage or require evidence of assessment
of student learning as part of their accreditation
processes.
At Miami University, assessment efforts are coordinated
by the University Assessment Team. See Assessment
Brief #1 for a synopsis of the formation and activities
of this group.
