School of Education, Health, and Society
KNH Mission Statement:
The Department of Kinesiology and Health advances the understanding of
health, physical activity and related cultural practices to improve life
quality and promote healthful, active living.
KNH Core Values:
- To prepare educated professionals in health and physical activity (e.g., teachers, coaches, health providers, fitness leaders, managers, athletic trainers, dietitians) for careers in public and private settings (e.g., schools, universities, hospitals, corporations, wellness centers, recreation centers).
- To enable students to think critically by constructing and
deconstructing complex relationships and engaging in thoughtful
decision-making as they analyze accepted perspectives and practices. - To develop and disseminate knowledge and creative efforts through
scholarly activities including publications, presentations, performances,
and consultations. - To provide a high quality physical activity life skills program for the
Miami University community focusing on the acquisition of skills and
knowledge in physical activities appropriate for life-long health. - To provide community service programs related to the enhancement of
health and physical activity skills. - Knowledge is organized and labeled in department curricular, research,
and service endeavors based on both multidisciplinary and cross-disciplinary
approaches. - The multidisciplinary approach emphasizes the accumulation of knowledge
through extensive study in traditional disciplines such as health education,
nutrition, and exercise physiology, each of which contributes to the overall
focus of understanding health, physical activity and related cultural
practices. - The cross-disciplinary approach facilitates inquiry that is
problem-focused or theme-oriented based on integrative relationships among related disciplines.
