Miami’s KNH Department offers seven majors and two minors. Our programs are highly regarded by employers, professional schools, and other academic institutions and our graduates go on to rewarding careers.

Majors are described briefly below with detailed descriptions also available.

Athletic Training:

Athletic Training

This major will prepare you for a career as a qualified allied health care professional educated and experienced in the prevention and management of health care problems associated with physical activity participation. Learn more.

Dietetics:

Dietetics

Students majoring in dietetics study people's nutritional needs and care. To become a registered dietician, dietetic graduates must complete a clinical experience and pass a professional examination. Learn more.

Exercise Science:

Exercise Science

The exercise science major is designed to give breadth and depth of knowledge in the physiological and psychological functioning of human beings under a variety of environmental and activity conditions. Learn more.

Health Studies:

Health Studies

The health studies curriculum is cross-disciplinary in nature. Students completing this major will be able to facilitate individual health behavior maintenance and/or change. Learn more.

Health Education:

Health Education

This major leads to a Bachelor of Science in Health Education. Successful completion of the degree and licensure requirements will result in an Ohio Teaching Licensure in Health Education, pre-kindergarten to grade 12. Learn more.

Physical Education:

This major leads to a Bachelor of Science in Education. Successful completion of the degree and passage of an Ohio licensure examination will allow students to teach physical education in pre-kindergarten to grade 12. Learn more.

Sport Studies:

Sport Studies

This major allows students who have a keen interest in sport to study it from a cross-disciplinary perspective, which includes psychological, sociological, and historical orientations of analysis. Learn more.

Minors:

Coaching:

This minor is designed for any student who is interested in formal preparation for a career in coaching. Learn more.

Nutrition:

This minor provides an understanding of human nutrition across the lifespan. Learn more.

 

Coaching Minor

Description of the program:
The coaching minor is designed for any student who is interested in formal preparation for a career in coaching. The courses are sequenced in the minor to allow students to develop knowledge about the art, science, and pedagogy of coaching. The minor offers students the opportunity to obtain competencies needed to coach at the youth, interscholastic, and intercollegiate levels of sport.

Nutrition Minor

Description of the program:
This minor provides an understanding of nutrition, including specialized courses in child nutrition, nutrition for the aging, and community nutrition. It is open to all students and complements majors in health-related professional and pre-professional programs. A minimum 2.0 grade point average is required for all courses in the minor. No courses may be taken credit/no credit.

KNH 102 Fundamentals of Nutrition (3)

KNH 405 Advanced Nutrition (3) (prerequisite: KNH 102 and a minimum of 6 hours of chemistry taken at the collegiate level)

KNH 407 Nutrition and Aging (3) (prerequisite: KNH 102 and junior standing)

KNH 408 Perinatal and Child Nutrition (3) (prerequisite: KNH 102)

KNH 409 Nutrition for Sports and Fitness (3) (prerequisite: KNH 102)
