Advising FAQ

School of Education, Health, and Society

Who is my academic advisor?

Log into myMiami and select the “student tab.” Your advisor should be listed in the upper-right hand corner.

How do I force add a KNH class?

Contact the instructor via email to inquire about adding a class. If you gain the permission of the instructor, obtain the force add sheet from the department office. Get the signature of the instructor and return to the office for the signature of the department chair. Then take the form to CAB/Registrar.

How do I change my major?

Go to the department of your new major to complete a form to change/add a major and meet with an advisor in your new major. The same form is used to change/add a minor as well as a thematic sequence.

How do I declare a minor or a thematic sequence?

Go to the department that offers the minor or thematic sequence you wish to declare. Some minors and thematic sequences are restricted or have limited enrollments, so be sure to check with the department that offers the minor or thematic sequences before you begin taking classes.

How do I get an advising hold removed from my record?

Advising holds typically occur when you’re relocating from a regional campus to the Oxford campus, transferring to Miami from another university, or coming off academic suspension. A hold is designed to ensure that you talk to an advisor and map out your academic future. Once you’ve had your advising session, your advisor will make arrangements to lift the hold.

How do I register for more than 20 hours a semester?

Before you can sign up for excess hours (more than 20 a semester), you must obtain approval from your academic advisor. Pick up a form from your departmental advisor or from the divisional advising office. Your advisor must then initial the completed form and send it to the divisional advisor for final processing.

Where do I learn more about registering for classes?

Go to the Registrar’s web site.
