Undergraduate Research
School of Education, Health, and Society
At many universities and colleges, research and opportunities to work one-on-one with faculty members outside of the classroom are reserved for graduate students. That is not the case at Miami.
Here are just a few examples undergraduate research conducted by KNH majors:
Lauren Rosing
She examined the link between the ability to read emotions (also known as emotional intelligence) and the presented self. People who are better able at interpreting other’s emotions also make clothing selections based on the situation they are in. Her study will be presented in April 2008 at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research.
Jessica Fagin
Her project looked at exercise vs competition as it relates to the development of psychological well being. There is a lot of research demonstrating the relationship of exercise to psychological well-being (e.g., reduction in anxiety and depression) but what about participation in competitive sport? Interviews were conducted to help answer this question.
Brandon Murphy
His research focused on the rehabilitation process from a psychological perspective, via interviews with coaches, athletes, and sports medicine personnel. Questions revolved around who was important in the process, stressors when injured, coping strategies, and recommendations for future treatment of athletes with injuries.
Katherine Beavis
Her project sought to extend current findings on the effects of marriage on health to the impact of committed relationships in college on health. The results of her study will be presented in April 2008 at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research.
