The award from Miami's Graduate Council includes a $1,000 stipend to be used for research expenses.

Vealey, who joined Miami’s faculty in 1984, was instrumental in creating a master’s in sports psychology program, which is now widely considered a top program in the field. Since the program’s creation she has served as primary advisory for 162 graduate students.

In her nominating letter Helaine Alessio, chair of kinesiology and health, said Vealey’s commitment to excellence has paid off as shown by the impressive placements of master’s students in jobs, prestigious doctoral programs and coveted internships in the field of sport psychology.

In the past five years, three of Vealey’s students have landed positions in the Army Center for Enhanced Performance at West Point. A sports psychology colleague, Bob Weinberg, said the ACEP coordinator told him that Miami students stood apart in their interview performance s based on their solid theoretical, research and practical training.
