SCHOOL LEADERSHIP PROGRAMS

The Department of Educational Leadership is a dynamic and exciting place to pursue Administration Licensure.  The School Leadership Program is characterized by a rigorous and innovative academic environment that incorporates problem-solving in school settings, a cohort of 20 students, an active and involved student body, and a high level of faculty-student interaction.  Designed in response to the growing call for educational reform, Miami University’s School Leadership program recognized that the United States cannot have effective schools without effective school leaders.

The need to restructure administration preparation programs has led Miami’s Department of Educational Leadership to reorient its leadership program around problems of practice.  The program recognizes that school administration must change to reflect the more participatory, collaborative organizational structure of schools.  In a participatory structure, problems are solved in teams where members collaborate and share their experiences and specialized knowledge. Successful team work demands a particular set of skills which need to be learned and practiced.  Academic study must include an emphasis on the craftlike nature of administration by recognizing the clinical dimension of professional practice.  But it must also make practice meaningful by examining theory as it occurs in administrative practice.

The School Leadership Program is recommended for students who want to be dynamic school leaders.  The course of study involves a planned sequence of core experiences addressing theories of learning, curriculum strategies, theories of leadership, program evaluation, decision-making, and planning as they occur within a collaborative organization.  The program provides opportunities to analyze, critique, and reflect on school organizations and the problems of practice that occur within them.  Many of the classes will meet off campus in area schools.  Through the use of four major thematic strands, the Miami program bridges the gap between theory and practice.

The School Leadership Program includes a 30 hour masters program followed by 15 hours of post-masters work that leads to Ohio state licensure.

CURRICULUM AND TEACHER LEADERSHIP

The Curriculum and Teacher Leadership program upholds a broad conception of leadership as a school based activity grounded in principles of social justice, critical literacy and community building, and as taken on by teachers in formal and informal leadership roles in their classrooms, schools, and communities. The program is guided by a conception of teacher leadership which encourages and develops the potential of teachers as curriculum-makers in the their classrooms and as critical decision-makers across the school and community environments. The program consists of 30 hours of coursework in the areas of curriculum, sociocultural foundations of education, research, assessment, and leadership. Coursework emphasizes solving educational problems through reflective practice, communication, collaboration, and team building among various stakeholders in the educational process. Unique to the program is a nine-hour concentration, which allows students to create focused learning plans of their own interests in areas across the department and university. Some concentrations can lead to professional licensure in Curriculum, Instruction, and Professional Development. The program is designed for K-12 practicing teachers but is open to students who are engaged in teaching or curriculum development in other professions. There is a rolling admission for this program, so you may apply at any time.

SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGY PROGRAM

This program leads to the Specialist in Education Degree as well as to licensure as a professional school psychologist.  A Master’s Degree is also earned during the course of study.  Assessment, intervention, and consultation training within a problem-solving model; school-based practicum experiences; and a full-time supervised nine-to-ten-month internship are included in this three-year program.  Your program of study must be approved by the department; minor substitutions can be approved.  After you complete 39 hours in the foundation component and pass a comprehensive examination, you are awarded an M.S. degree and admitted to candidacy for the Ed.S degree.  After completing requirements for the professional practice component, which includes a thesis research project, you receive an Ed.S degree.

MIDDLE CHILDHOOD GENERALIST ENDORSEMENT (4-6)

The Middle Childhood Generalist Endorsement can be added to any existing Middle Childhood license and for any combination of the four areas of concentration.  It will require taking two additional courses in each of the subject areas to be added to the license.  The generalist endorsement will allow teachers to teach those subjects in grades 4-6 only.
