Entering its second century of preparing teachers, the Department of Teacher Education offers majors and licensure programs in Early Childhood Education (ages 3-8 and prekindergarten-grade 3), Middle Childhood Education (ages 8-14 and grades 4-9), Adolescent to Young Adult Education (ages 12-21 and grades 7-12), and Foreign Language Education (ages 3-21 and grades prekindergarten-12). These programs are delivered through courses taught by over 30 full-time faculty, and numerous qualified in-service teachers and supervisors. Each program provides a series of field experiences in partnership schools and opportunities to observe or teach in international settings. The Department of Teacher Education is fully accredited through the Ohio Department of Education and the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education
The Department is committed to preparing educators for lifelong learning and inclusive teaching practices for all students within approved undergraduate and graduate programs. This preparation requires a foundation in the following: a liberal arts education with content knowledge in specific disciplines as appropriate, pedagogical skills, cultural competence, understanding of learning contexts and environments, and professional commitments and dispositions. This builds on a commitment to advancing knowledge through scholarship and research, as well as service to the university, community, and professional organizations.
