Life Science Program Description
Each AYA Science Education major leads to a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education. Students who wish to become licensed in the State of Ohio to teach science to students in grades 7-12 will choose at least one of seven science licensure areas. The science education program at Miami University provides theoretical and practical knowledge and skills in the areas of science, learning, and science teaching that are consistent with the National Science Teaching Standards, especially in the areas of inquiry, science-society-technology, and evolution.
During their study, students will participate in field experiences in urban and suburban/rural classrooms where they will have the opportunity to implement inquiry based lessons. The program culminates in a semester long experience in which students work closely with mentor teachers in high schools and/or junior high schools, eventually assuming instructional responsibilities for all classes. Throughout the program, students have the opportunity to join a professional science education organization, such as NSTA, NABT, or ACS as well as judging at local or regional science fairs or attending science education professional conferences.
