Study Abroad Program in International Health

Live
and study in Europe (France and Switzerland) for five weeks
during the months of June and July. Students (undergraduate
and graduate) enroll in two classes for a total of
eight credit hours. Seniors at Miami University can receive
Miami plan capstone credit for the program. Honors students
can
also
receive
honor's credit.
Classes
are taught at the Université de Bourgogne in Dijon,
France. Students attend seminars at national and international
organizations including the World Health Organization (WHO)
and the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS in Gevena,
Switzerland and Doctors without Borders in Paris, France.
Graduate
and undergraduate students can enroll in the following
two courses:
- KNH 444/544 - International
Health: Global Perspectives (4 credits)
- KNH 445/545 - A European
Perspective: Health, Social, Economic and Political Impacts
of Health Promotion (4 credits)
The program
is conducted in English and the Director of the program
speaks English and French.

Visit Mt Everest and Tibet
May 13 - June
13, 2008
We will visit Nepal and Tibet for a month. We will live with a group of Sherpa as we hike up to Mt. Everest Base Camp and Kala Pathar at about 18,000 feet. Students (undergraduate/graduate) enroll in either KNH 499/599 or SOC 499/599 class for a total of 6-8 credit hours. Seniors at Miami University can receive Miami plan capstone credit for the program.
During the trip each student will speak with Sherpa daily and learn about how the Sherpa live including their health care, diet, role of the family, religion etc. Additionally we will monitor everyone’s blood oxygenation levels as we ascend the mountain and examine physiological adaptations that our bodies make at altitude.
Graduate and undergraduate students must enroll in the following course:
- KNH or SOC 499/599 – Life at Altitude
