Education Teacher Education Major

about admission to the Physical Education program at Miami University,

2.
What are the procedures to transfer into the Physical Education
Teacher Education (PETE) program from another university?
1. Start with
the Admissions Office. Contact that office to be admitted into
Miami University.
Admissions
will evaluate your transcript(s) from your previous institution(s)
to decide which classes will transfer to Miami. After being admitted,
proceed to the next step.

2. Examine
the Physical Education Teacher Education Program Requirements
and list of courses. Consider how many courses you must take to
complete our program.
3. Once you
are accepted into Miami University, you will be assigned an academic
advisor.
You should
receive notification in the mail, which includes the advisors
name. Look at the KNH website for information on how to contact
that faculty or call 513-529-2700.

4. Review
the admission requirements for a Physical Education Teacher Education
Major on our web page.
* You must
be admitted into the Physical Education Teacher Education Program
by the PETE faculty.
* Only
classes with a "C" or higher grade will transfer.
3. What are the procedures to transfer
into the Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) program from
another major at Miami University?

2. Contact
Lois
Burney
in Phillips Hall to complete a "change of major" form.
3. Mrs. Burney
will assign you an academic advisor. Look at the KNH website for
information on how to contact that faculty

4. Your academic
advisor will assist you in scheduling classes and prepare you
to be evaluated by the Physical Education Teacher Education faculty.
* You must
be admitted into the Physical Education Teacher Education Program
by the PETE faculty.

How do I become certified/licensed to teach Physical Education PreK
12 in Ohio?
The certification
of teachers to teach in the public schools will change to a license
to teach on September 2, 2002. If you are entering our program and
will not graduate before Spring semester, 2002, then you will be
on the new licensure program.
To become licensed
to teach Physical Education PreK 12, you must complete all
of the following items.
1. Pass the
Praxis II exams.
Register for
two exams: The Physical Education Content Knowledge (code 10091)
and the Principles of Learning and Teaching. You may select any
of the three Principles of Learning and Teaching exams according
to the grades you think you might like to teach. The code for
Grades K 6 is 30522. The code for Grades 5 - 9 is 30523.
The code for Grades 7 - 12 is 30524. For example, if you want
to teach elementary school, then select the K 6 exam.
To pass the exams you must meet or exceed the qualifying score.

a. You can
obtain a registration booklet for the Praxis exam in room 205
McGuffey Hall or go to the Praxis
website .
b. We suggest
you take the exam at the beginning of your senior year after you
have completed KNH 247 & KNH 348 and all of the EAP core classes.
If you fail the exam, you must take it again and pay another registration
fee.
2. Go to 205
McGuffey and obtain a Finger Print card. Your finger prints must
be checked and cleared. You may take the finger print card to
the Oxford City Police station or a Police station where you reside.
It can take from 2 to 6 weeks for a finger print check.
3. Complete
the Physical Education Teacher Education Program with a G.P.A.
of 2.25 or higher.
4. When your
Praxis II scores are returned, go to 205 McGuffey Hall and complete
an application for licensure. See Kathy Salmon, if you have any
questions.
*You should
receive your license in the mail about 2 weeks after graduation,
if you have completed and passed all requirements.

How do I become certified/licensed to teach physical education K-12
in a State other than Ohio?
1. Contact that
States Department of Education. Look for a website or you
can find the addresses with Kathy Salmon in 205 McGuffey Hall.
2. Read and
follow the instructions for each state. They may differ from the
State of Ohio.
*We recommend
that you apply for the State of Ohio License to teach in addition
to other states.

How do I find out how long it will take me to:
a. graduate
from Miami with a Physical Education degree (and certification/lincensure
to teach) after transferring from other university?
After being
admitted to Miami University, your classes will be evaluated for
transfer by someone in the Admissions office. Review the Physical
Education Teacher Education Program requirements and coursework.
Count the number of hours and/or classes remaining. You must complete
all of the requirements. Our program takes 4 years to complete,
with one full semester of intern teaching in the public schools.
How hours you are able to transfer into Miami will determine how
long it will take you to graduate. You must be accepted into the
program by the Physical Education Teacher Education faculty (see
web page for admission). If you have questions, contact Dr. Melissa

b. graduate
from Miami with a Physical Education degree (and certification/lincensure
to teach) after transferring from other another major at Miami University?
