Graduate
Assistantships
Graduate
teaching assistantships are available in the KNH Department.
These assistantships provide a tuition waiver and a stipend
of approximately $10,148 for each academic year. Graduate
students who are awarded a KNH assistantship will be assigned
teaching responsibilities in the KNH Department. Specifically,
some graduate assistants will be assigned to teach basic
sport or physical activity classes (e.g., tennis, ice skating,
racquetball, weight training, individual exercise, dance).
Other graduate assistants will be assigned to teach basic
laboratory classes in our undergraduate professional program
(e.g., lab classes in nutrition, health, motor learning,
or exercise physiology). In addition, other graduate assistants
may be assigned to lead discussion group sessions in our
undergraduate professional program (e.g., lead/teach small
discussion groups for such classes as personal health,
leisure studies, sport sociology, nutrition, sport psychology).
Finally, some graduate assistants may be selected to work
as research assistants, journal editorial assistants, or
as assistants in the Undergraduate and Graduate Coordinator's
offices. In summary, graduate students who are awarded
graduate assistantships in the KNH Department would have
the opportunity to work in a variety of teaching, research,
and service settings (e.g., in health, exercise, fitness,
or sport settings).
It
is important for applicants to note that the KNH graduate
teaching assistantships are awarded on a competitive basis.
That is, KNH has a limited number of assistantships (typically
between 15 and 25) to award to in-coming graduate students
each year.
Assistantships
may be available in other units on Miami's campus. Specifically,
the Office of Residence Life, the Office of Learning Assistance,
and the Graduate School typically also award assistantships
to qualified students each year. Other sources of support
for graduate students include grants-in-aid (waiver of
tuition) from the Graduate School, work study funds, federal
and state loans, and scholarships through the Development
and Alumni Affairs offices of Miami University. Financial
aid is not guaranteed. The competition for financial aid
is stiff regardless of the agency from which you seek it.
In KNH, about 75% of our students find some form of financial
aid each year.
