Athletic Training

Description of theProgram

The athletic training major at Miami University leads to the Bachelor of Science of Education degree and is an accredited curriculum by CAATE (Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Traing Education). Students who successfully complete this major will be qualified and eligible to take the Board of Certification examination.

The Mission of the Athletic Training Educational Program at Miami University is to prepare educated professional Athletic Trainers by providing opportunities through the academic curriculum as well as clinical experiences with Miami’s Intercollegiate Athletics and off-campus internships, in which students develop competency and proficiency of entry level skills and for successful completion of the Board of Certification Examination and employment placement in the Athletic Training Profession.

The program requirements for the major are listed below in a four-year sequence. Students will develop skills in assessment, rehabilitation, reconditioning, prevention, immediate care, and administration. Areas of study include anatomy, biomechanics, and therapeutic exercise and modalities. In addition to the formal course requirements, a great deal of clinical experience under the direct supervision of a certified athletic trainer is required to successfully fulfill the program requirements and to attain a competency and proficiency of the required skills. We encourage students to expect to put in a minimum of 1200 clinical hours to successfully complete Miami’s curriculum and clinical education competencies. (Most states also have an hour requirement to attain licensure to practice.) All students admitted into the program are afforded the opportunity to complete this requirement. The clinical hours will be attained through scheduled clinical field experiences which shall include on campus Athletic Training Facility morning and afternoon hours, sport practices and competitions with Miami University Intercollegiate Athletics, local high schools, and clinics.

Admission Requirements for the Athletic Training Major:

To enter the athletic training major, students must make application to and be accepted by the faculty of the Department of Kinesiology and Health . Admission to the Athletic Training program is selective due to the accreditation enrollment limitation. Students may pre-major by becoming “affiliate” athletic training students. The Pre-major occurs for two semesters during which time the student will be rotated through clinical experience in Intercollegiate Athletics for three five-week rotations each semester. Students will observe and assist the Certified Athletic Trainers and athletic training students in a variety of Athletic Training Facilities with several different teams and athletes.

At the end of that experience, candidates must have:

a.) at least a 2.5 GPA overall in 24 completed credit hours

b.) have completed KNH 182 and 183, 183 L and with a grade of “B” or better, KNH 188 and KNH 188.L

c.) have completed 12 Miami Plan hours

d.) have successful evaluations from the supervising athletic trainers.

The students with the highest GPA and highest scores on written evaluations from the athletic training faculty and staff will receive preference in admittance into the athletic training major if there are more applicants who meet the minimum criteria than there are slots available.

Students must meet the criteria listed on the Technical Standards sheet. The technical standards set forth by the Athletic Training Education Program (ATEP) establish the essential qualities considered necessary for students admitted to this program to achieve the knowledge, skills, and competencies of an entry-level athletic trainer, as well as meet the expectations of the program’s accrediting agency (CAATE). In the event a student is unable to fulfill these technical standards, with or without reasonable accommodation, the student will not be admitted into the program.
