KINESIOLOGY AND HEALTH :: admission process
 

1. What are the admission requirements for a Physical Education Teacher Education Major?

Requirements for Entrance Into and Completion of Physical Education Teaching Professional Program

Entrance into the Physical Education Teaching Professional Program will be dependent upon students meeting all of the specified requirements list below. If a students fails to meet the admission criteria, he/she should meet with an advisor to discuss the best plan of action. Once a student is accepted into the program, he/she must maintain an overall GPA of 2.25 or higher to continue with physical education teaching professional courses.

1. Admission to the KNH Teacher Preparation Program.

a. complete all prerequisites or deficiencies from High School.

b. complete Miami Plan Foundation Areas I (English Composition) and V (Mathematics, Formal Reasoning, or Technology) with grades of "C" or higher.

c. complete a total of 30 semester hours, including KNH 190 and 247, with a minimum overall GPA of 2.25 or higher.

d. pass speech and hearing screening conducted by the Communications Department. (present documentation in portfolio)

e. work with children/adolescents in educational settings (i.e., camp counselor, coach, boy/girl scout leader, church group) totaling at least 100 hours, in the previous five years. . (present documentation in portfolio)

f. present an entry portfolio to the KNH Teacher Preparation faculty which includes: a resume, documentation of experiences working with children or adolescents for 100 hours in the previous five years, three letters of recommendation, current CPR certification, and a teaching biography.

g. complete an application to the KNH Physical Education Teaching program area, interview with the KNH Teacher Preparation faculty, and be accepted by a majority vote of the faculty.

* E, F, and G should be completed by conclusion of student’s sophomore year.

2. Admission to Intern Teaching in KNH Teacher Preparation Program.

a. complete KNH Departmental Core courses with a "C" or higher.

b. complete SEAP Divisional Core courses with a "C" or higher.

c. complete all KNH Content for Physical Education courses with a "C" or higher.

d. complete all KNH Professional Content courses with a "C" or higher.

e. application completed and accepted by majority of KNH Teacher Preparation

Faculty two semesters prior to Intern Teaching semester.

f. complete a TB (tuberculosis) Test within 6 months of placement starting date.

3. Exit or Graduation Criteria.

Students must apply for graduation one semester prior to the graduation date. Students should meet with an advisor each semester of their Junior and Senior years to be sure that they are meeting all graduation requirements.

a. completion of all required course work.

b. successful completion of Intern Teaching Assignment with no more than 5 missed days.

c. have a minimum overall GPA of 2.25.

d. successful completion of Praxis II: Physical Education Content Knowledge and Principles of Learning and Teaching.

e. successful completion of Praxis III Assessment during Intern Teaching experience.

f. completion of a teaching portfolio.
