EHS Name

Prior to Jan. 1, 2008, the School of Education, Health and Society (EHS) was known as the School of Education and Allied Professions (EAP). The current name better reflects the scope of efforts of the school’s five departments and the interrelationships among the academic disciplines.

Technology Initiatives

  • The Digital Learning Initiative is a pilot project that the Department of Teacher Education began in the 2007-08 academic year to equip students and university and school personnel with 21st century knowledge and skills. The project will prepare future teachers, who will be using wireless laptops, to seamlessly integrate technology into their classrooms.
  • While the shortage of special education teachers has been acute for years, it has been difficult for working teachers to get the additional certification needed to fill the gap. Miami offers an Alternative Special Education Licensure Program that lets teachers get certified online. The program is the first of its kind in Ohio.

Interaction With Students

Diversity

Minorities constitute 8 percent of EHS undergraduates, 22 percent of EHS graduate students and 16 percent of EHS tenured or tenure-track faculty. The School is committed to the belief that all students need the kinds of training, exposure and experiences that will allow them to function effectively in an increasingly diverse society. For more information about diversity efforts, please visit the diversity section of our site.

Team Scholarship for Ohio’s Teachers

In recognition of the important contributions Ohio’s teachers and school administrators provide Ohioans, Miami has established the Teacher Education Access at Miami (TEAM) Scholarship. The scholarship reduces tuition and fees for professional development and/or earning a graduate-level degree by 50 percent. For more information please visit the TEAM Scholarship web site.

Partnerships

Strong and growing partnerships with school districts and community agencies provide hands-on opportunities for students and research opportunities for faculty. Miami is one of the few schools of education nationwide to have a partnership office.

Research and centers

EHS faculty are addressing the critical issues facing children, schools and society in their research. Please visit the research section of our site for more information.
