Educational Psychology Program

Thank you for your interest in the
Master of Education Degree
in Educational Psychology
.

The Miami University Master of Education (M.Ed.) program in Educational Psychology allows students to enhance and broaden their abilities related to theoretical, practical, and research knowledge associated with the psychology of education. The curriculum is flexible enough so that beyond the core of required courses, you (in consultation with an advisor) can fashion a program which will allow you to specialize in various areas within either the Psychological Focus or Educational Focus:

The Psychological Focus does not require a teaching license. With a background in psychology, education, sociology, family studies, or other relevant field, you can obtain concentrated study in 1) Human Development and Learning Option, 2) Self-Focused Option--with advisor approval, you may concentrate in another educational psychology area, such as measurement and evaluation. You may complete the masters with one year of full time study or pursue the degree as a part time student. This focus provides students a chance to extend their knowledge and skills in their present positions, become prepared to assume master teacher roles or move to assessment or research-related positions, or to examine areas of special psychological concern.

The Educational Focus enables you to obtain an intervention specialist licensure in one of the following areas: Mild/Moderate, Moderate/Intensive, Gifted, or Early Childhood. If you already hold a certification in general education or special education or a licensure in early childhood, middle childhood or adolescence, you may complete one additional licensure area within the master's program with approximately one year of full time study. If you do not hold another certificate/license, the program with licensure takes approximately 1½ to 2 years of full-time study. Licensure may also be pursued within the masters as a part time student.

Financial aid through graduate assistantships (including monthly cash stipend, waiver of instructional fees and out-of-state surcharge) is available on a competitive basis for each year of on-campus residence. Although the master's program has rolling admission, if you wish to be considered for a graduate assistantship, you must have your application materials in by February 1 of the year before the fall in which you plan to begin the program.

We encourage you to contact the Department of Educational Psychology (201 McGuffey Hall; phone 529-2432) to discuss any aspect of the program with an educational psychology faculty member. We are pleased that you are interested in further study in educational psychology and look forward to receiving your application.
