Baxter Magolda honored

Marcia Baxter Magolda, who teaches and advises in the college student personnel master’s degree program, has once again been recognized for her scholarly achievements.

The Association for the Study of Higher Education recently presented her with its Research Achievement Award, which annually is given to an individual who has advanced the understanding of higher education in a significant way.

“This is well deserved recognition for someone who tirelessly focuses her attention on contributing new knowledge to the field,” said Carine Feyten, dean of the School of Education and Allied Professions.

Baxter Magolda’s research focuses on how young adults learn, the holistic development of students, and higher education’s role in fostering critical thinking and self-authorship.  The two-time winner of the American College Personnel Association’s outstanding research award is nationally known for a longitudinal study of young adult development that began in 1986 and continues today.

Miami has honored Baxter Magolda, too.  In 2003, she was named Distinguished Professor of Educational Leadership by Miami’s board of trustees, and in 2002 she was awarded the university’s prestigious Benjamin Harrison Medallion.
